Description

The Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park is located near the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, which is registered as a World Heritage Site, and other two shrines and one temple in Nikko, and is bordered on the north by the Nikko mountain range including Mt. It is located in a quiet and scenic area surrounded by a grove of cedar trees.

The main attraction is the former imperial villa, which was built in 1899 as a retreat for Crown Prince Yoshihito (Emperor Taisho). The Imperial Villa was used by three generations of Emperors and Crown Princes, including Emperor Taisho, until it was closed in 1947. After the war, it was used as a museum, lodging, and training facility, and was restored and maintained by Tochigi Prefecture over a period of three years, and was revived as a memorial park in 2000. The buildings are a group of buildings with architectural styles from the late Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods, and are the largest of the existing imperial residences from the Meiji and Taisho periods. These buildings and gardens offer a glimpse into the architectural techniques and imperial culture of the period. In 2003, it was designated as a "National Important Cultural Property" as a valuable building, and in 2007, it was selected as one of the "100 Best Historical Parks in Japan.

At the Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa "Saryo" located in the outdoor rest area, visitors can enjoy a set meal of green tea and sweets, "Nikko Kirifuri Kogen Gyu Curry", Omelet Rice or others. You can spend a relaxing time in the calm Japanese-style restaurant. (Open only from April to November)

Please allow 1 hour and 30 minutes for a full tour of the park.
