Description

One of the first people to recognize the value of Van Gogh (who received little recognition during his lifetime) and begin collecting his works was Helene Kröller-Müller (1869–1939), founder of the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands. The “Great Van Gogh Exhibition,” held in two phases, is composed entirely of works from this museum’s collection.

The first phase of the exhibition focuses on the early half of Van Gogh’s life. It begins with his early Dutch period influenced by the Barbizon School and the Hague School, continues through his time in Paris where he interacted with Impressionist painters, and culminates in Arles in southern France where he created the masterpiece Terrace of a Café at Night (Place du Forum).

The second phase, scheduled for 2027–2028, will feature The Langlois Bridge at Arles returning to Japan for the first time in approximately 70 years. The exhibition will tour Kobe, Fukushima, and Tokyo. The year 2025 marked 30 years since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and 2026 marks 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake. We sincerely hope that encountering Van Gogh’s works — often described as a “search of the soul” — will inspire visitors and serve as a source of strength for the future.
