Description

The first time Japanese explorers set foot in Antarctica was in 1912 — just one year after a Norwegian expedition became the first in human history to reach the South Pole.

In 1956, the first Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition departed Tokyo’s Harumi Wharf aboard the icebreaker Soya, marking the beginning of Japan’s Antarctic challenge. In 2026, Japan celebrates the 70th anniversary of its Antarctic research efforts.

Highlights

Rare real specimens collected in Antarctica on display!

This exhibition features extraordinary real-world samples, including “Antarctic Ice,” a time capsule preserving records of past climate change. Visitors can also explore over 30 meteorite samples collected in Antarctica — often called a “holy ground” for meteorite discovery — including iron meteorites you can touch and hold, as well as rare specimens believed to have originated from the Moon and Mars.

Also on display is the real “Touchable Mars Meteorite (Slice)” previously exhibited at the Osaka-Kansai Expo. Experience these invaluable and authentic samples up close!

Immersive large-scale visuals of glaciers and auroras, plus interactive exhibits!

Enjoy powerful large-format visuals of glaciers and auroras, along with hands-on experiences such as a “penguin census” and a “blizzard simulation.”

Through these exhibits, visitors can explore global environmental changes and Earth’s connection to space, while discovering scientific insights and future implications derived from decades of Antarctic research data.
