Overview
Ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), who was active in the late Edo period, was a disciple of Utagawa Toyokuni, the founder of the Utagawa school. Kuniyoshi rose to prominence with his “Suikoden Series,” based on Chinese classics, earning him the nickname “Kuniyoshi of Warrior Prints.”
He went on to produce works across a wide range of genres beyond warrior prints, including portraits of beautiful women, historical paintings, and even landscape works incorporating Western techniques, fully demonstrating his extraordinary talent.
This exhibition showcases approximately 200 works spanning Kuniyoshi’s specialties, including warrior prints, caricatures, and bijin-ga, offering a deep dive into his richly imaginative world.
